Biography:

Kaori Fukuyama is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in San Diego, working across site-specific installation, sculpture, and painting. Her practice focuses on perception, with particular attention to light and its role in shaping awareness of color, form, and space.

Originally from Kumamoto, Japan, Fukuyama holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. Her background in environmental design continues to inform her approach to spatial relationships, material considerations, and the experience of place, resulting in works that respond closely to their surrounding contexts.

Through both studio-based work and large-scale public installations, Fukuyama creates contemplative environments that invite reflection and foster connection across diverse communities. Her work is held in permanent collections including the Rothko Museum (Latvia), the Panoptès Collection (Belgium), the UC San Diego Jacobs Healing Arts Collection, and the City and County of San Diego, and has been exhibited at Laguna Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and the Oceanside Museum of Art.

One misty morning in Japan, I observed komorebi (木漏れ日)—sunlight filtering through tree canopies to form shifting patterns of light and shadow. In that moment, I became acutely aware not only of shadows, but of the light itself—radiating, shimmering, and alive. Experiences like this continue to shape my practice and my fascination with how light affects perception, memory, and emotion. — Kaori Fukuyama
