Biography:

Kaori Fukuyama is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in San Diego, known for her site-specific installations, sculptures, and paintings that explore the interplay of light, color, and form. Originally from Kumamoto, Japan, she earned a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon and worked in the environmental design field before pursuing her art practice full time.

One misty morning in Japan, I observed komorebi (木漏れ日)—sunlight filtering through tree canopies to form shifting patterns of light and shadow. In that moment, I became acutely aware not only of shadows, but of the light itself—radiating, shimmering, and alive. Experiences like this continue to shape my practice and my fascination with how light affects perception, memory, and emotion. — Kaori Fukuyama
